Nine NYJTL Students Win USTA Eastern’s Arthur Ashe Essay Contest

Nine students from Metro’s New York Junior Tennis League have won USTA Eastern’s 2010 Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. The students were asked to write about Ashe’s achievements, and the winning essays were selected by Eastern staff and volunteers. The students selected will be recognized at USTA Eastern’s Junior Awards Luncheon in January, and be entered into the national contest, for a chance to be VIPs at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess, attend a professional sporting event, see a Broadway show and receive a special award at a luncheon held in their honor. The Eastern award winners were:
Boys 10 and Under: Calvin Semczuk - Astoria, NY
Girls 10 and Under: Jayla Speller - Bronx, NY
Boys 11-12: Jonathan Pesantez - Holliswood, NY
Girls 11-12: Isis Gill-Reid - Brooklyn, NY
Boys 13-14: Kevin Huynh - Astoria, NY
Girls 13-14: Lydia Nieto - Astoria, NY
Boys 15-16: Brian Orellana - New York, NY
Girls 15-16: Ashley Masanto - Brooklyn, NY
Boys 17-18: Alfredo Colon - Bronx, NY
