September 28, 2009 09:17 PM

The Metro Region Park Summer Jr. Team Tennis saw action in 18, 14 and 12 intermediate and QuickStart play. The league had over 42 teams and the junior’s players saw action in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan. The play was intense and competitive but at the end a good time was had by all. Well as they say the cream always rises to the top and it sure did as Youth and Tennis from Queens swept the league and won all three divisions in intermediate play. Dr. Harry Lopez coached all three Youth and Tennis teams to victory. In his words, “Youth and Tennis has been around for over 30 years primarily operating in South East Queens and we have produced hundreds of player and it’s a manner of a whole community involved in the development of the players.”

The Metro summer league was sponsored by the Highland Park Sports and Education Foundation and it has seen huge support from local tennis groups that primarily run their summer tennis programs from city and state parks. Bill Briggs Executive Director of the Youth and Tennis Program stated” we have played team tennis for over 30 years and the bulk has been in the summer and now it can officially go on record and the USTA can see how successful our programs really have been”.
