Beacon Shines Again in New York City High School Playoffs

May 25, 2010 06:21 PM

The boys tennis teams of Beacon and Cardozo High School were both undefeated going into the final match of the New York City Public Schools Athletic League Championships on May 16.

But in the end, it was Beacon that shined the brightest, winning 4-1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and capturing its fourth PSAL championship in five years.

“I am very proud of my team,” said Beacon Coach Bayard Faithfull. “They have trained very hard this season and the reward was superb play by each of them.”

The match began with a quick victory by the Beacon doubles team of Jake Aronson and Leo Bolshakov, 6-0, 6-0. Christian Waldron, playing with a cast on his left-arm (which he uses for his two-handed backhand) followed with a convincing singles win against Hugh Mo of Cardozo, 6-2, 6-0. It was a valiant effort on the part of Waldron as he defended his backhand side with high slices, and waited to hit a punishing forehand to finish the points.

The match was sealed when Justin Fields and Peter Poulos won 6-4, 6-2 in doubles.

Beacon’s Quinton Vega capped off the day, defeating Cardozo’s Jon Raude 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

The Beacon boys tennis team has been in the PSAL finals the last five years and has won the championship in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Congratulations to all of the players!
